Crazy Hosting Deals
20 Dec 2007

A lot has happened in the web hosting market over the last seven years, with deals available which seem too good to be true.
The reality is that web servers do have limitations as to disk space and bandwidth.

There is an old saying:-

If it sounds too good too be true it usually is! All hosts have the same basic limitations when it comes to server resources and specs.

There is no magic server that has a never ending supply of ram and cpu. If a host ever claims to give unlimited space or bandwidth DO NOT JOIN THEM.
The thing to remember is that the average web site uses about 15 MB of disc space and less than 400 MB bandwidth a month.
So what hosting companies do is they lie!
What appears to be a bargain, the terms of service often spell out a different story, where an escape clause deals with the reality of such claims.
How do such deals exist is all found in the fine print under the 'Terms of Hosting'

We found this clause on a web site making ridiculous claims

When a web site is found to be monopolizing the resources available, xxxxx Inc. reserves the right to suspend that site immediately. This policy is implemented only in extreme circumstances and is intended to prevent the misuse of our servers.
Please note that over 85% of our clients never exceed even 2000 megs of total FTP and web page transfer combined, so you can be assured that our bandwidth is not choked by numerous 'load-heavy' sites. To further protect the integrity of our service, any individual site consistently using 10% or more of the system's resources may be issued a warning or have its account deactivated.

They make up scam plans with tons of space and 50 gigs bandwidth for around $8 bucks a month. It's a numbers game.... Only one or two of every 100 people that signup on the plan are going to use the 50 gigs bandwidth. So what do they do? They terminate the sites that use it saying "your site is using too many resources".
" They aren't lying about the resource usage, it's the truth! Most people don't realize that bandwidth and space used have nothing to do with the server resources being used. Resource usage has to do with the amount of cpu and ram a site uses. If a site uses their 50 gigs bandwidth they aren't kicked for using their bandwidth they are kicked for using up most of the servers cpu and ram.
Another thing to remember is that the cheaper the plan is, and the more space / bandwidth included the more sites per server the host will have to pack in to make their money back. So going by the above numbers which we would say is pretty accurate from our numbers... If a company hosted 200 sites per server and 2% of the server used the 50 gigs bandwidth that would equal 200 gigs bandwidth a month used on the server. Guess what - If they don't kick those 4 sites using it, those 4 sites are going to be using more resources than all 196 sites on the server combined. So think about it would a hosting company boot 4 people paying $8 bucks a month in order to double the amount of sites they can hold on the server? You bet they would!

We only put 100-200 sites per shared hosting server, our pricing and packages don't force us to jam sites on to a server in order to be profitable. If you think most hosts put less then 200 sites per server you're living in a fantasy land. Most hosts put 1000's of sites per server. . .Making it all that much more important to kick the 2% or so that use what their plan comes with.

In New Zealand we have laws in place  if you mislead people by your advertising then you pay the price.

Example:-

Xtra limits ‘unlimited Internet usage’ plan

Press Release: Consumer's Institute MEDIA RELEASE 24 November 2006

Xtra limits ‘unlimited Internet usage’ plan Consumers’ Institute has lodged complaints with the Commerce Commission and the Advertising Standards Authority over Xtra’s Go Large broadband advertising.
The Go Large plan, touted as “unlimited Internet usage at maximum download speeds” is, in fact, subject to Xtra’s ‘Fair Use Policy’ and ‘traffic management’.....

The fine print that XTRA used was under the 'Fair Use Policy' terms, which means the plan was not unlimited.

At NZServers we do place limitations with hosting plans, plus we limit the number of clients allowed on a server.
When a client starts pulling large amounts of bandwidth, then our policy is to upgrade that client to a dedicated server.
