Domain Registration
A domain is normally registered through an approved domain name reseller. This ensures the domain name registered legally belongs to the Registrant. The Registrant is the legal owner of the domain. The Legal Registrant can:- - Register other domain names which they own.
- Change nameservers
This allows the person who owns the domain the freedom to choose any web hosting provider. - Purchase secure certificates
Register the domain for more than one year
The legal registrant is responsible for the domain renewal and will receive auto generated reminder notices. Payment is normally made using a Credit Card or Paypal.
What happened with Cromac Cromac were never an approved dealer to re sell domain names. What Cromac did was to regsiter a domain with DirectNic and then regsiter additional domains on clients behalf. With any legal registrant you can register additional domain names, but these belong to the registrant as opposed to another user. This meant the domain names belonged to 'Cromac' as being the legal registrant.
Because there is only one login and password access can not be granted to other users as this would compromise the security of the other domain holders. As credit card information is held for the legal registrant access can not be granted for obvious reasons. All domain renewals come to NZServers and this means we have to send out reminders and collect the money. Often in good faith we pay for the domains but have been caught too many times by others who have never paid, or by those who pay by TT for a $30.00 domain fee and then the bank deduct a $25 admin fee.
NZServers in good faith has kept this structure alive, but it's now time to ensure that domain holders are the legal registrants and own the rights to the domain.
